Deming church helps feed needy families

DEMING, N.M. (AP) - Deming's 1st Baptist Church distributed $18,000 worth of food boxes to dozens of needy families this holiday season.

The Deming Headlight reports that with the help of a local supermarket, the church was able to help many families. Over 100 volunteers came together at the church to assemble some 1,500 boxes of food.

Each box contained canned vegetables, stuffing, a bag of potatoes, a bag of fruit, ham, bread, pie and a two liter soft drink.

Names of families in need were obtained through organizations and local schools.

Over 1,200 of the food boxes were delivered by volunteers directly to homes in the community. Many of the boxes were delivered to the elderly on fixed incomes.

A number of the families that benefited have lost a job or have a job but are having trouble paying their bills.
