ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) - Four adults and two children died Friday afternoon when a small car veered across U.S. Highway 70 into the path of a van about 25 miles west of Roswell.
New Mexico State Police reported the driver of a Ford car registered in Clovis lost control shortly before 3:45 p.m. in far eastern Lincoln County. The car crossed to the opposite side of the four-lane highway and into the path of a Chevrolet van from Huntsville, Texas.
Three adults in the van, the driver of the Ford and two children under the age of 10 were pronounced dead at the scene, according to State Police. Two others survived the crash but are reported to be in critical condition.
One survivor was taken to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell, and the other was airlifted to Lubbock, Texas.
There were a total of six people in the van and two in the car, but it was not clear from initial reports where the children and survivors were riding.
Names will not be released until next of kin have been notified.
The crash shut down U.S. 70 for about two hours.
