Roswell reacts to postponed space jump

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) - Felix Baumgartner's much-anticipated supersonic jump from the stratosphere was postponed again Tuesday in Roswell.

Locals and out-of-towners gathered at the Roswell International Air Center in hopes of witnessing history first-hand only to be disappointed.

The daredevil, dubbed Fearless Felix wants to become the first person to break the sound barrier in a free-fall jump and to do it from the highest altitude, nearly 23 miles up.

The jump was postponed early Tuesday morning because of wind. Then at 11:30 a.m., when the 55-story-tall balloon that will take him to the edge of space was filled up, it became clear the winds were going to make the jump too dangerous.

"It was scary when it started leaning over, you know?" said Roswell resident Greg Neal after the mission abort. "It was scary that it might hit the ground or something, but they know what they're doing. Tthey've got it under control."

"We've been hearing about this for so long, and we're so excited," said Donna Oracion of Roswell. "But we know that they've got to consider the safety first, and that's important. So we're just anxious to see it done."

The Red Bull Stratos team announced Wednesday's weather conditions are not favorable for a launch, and that they'll monitor the weather closely before making a decision on another launch date.

If Baumgartner succeeds, he will not only set world records, he will also help scientists understand how the body reacts with the extreme conditions high above the earth's surface.
