NMMI investigating Facebook post

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - An offensive Facebook post popped up on a New Mexico Military Institute cadet's page over the weekend and the use of the n-word caught the attention of school officials pretty quickly.

"Somebody hacked into a cadet's Facebook account and posted a racial slur on the Facebook account," said NMMI Special Assistant to the Superintendent Carl Hansen.

The slur was directed at African Americans on the football team, saying in part they need to get a life.

Hansen who is based at the school in Roswell told KRQE News 13 over the phone Monday afternoon they are trying to figure out who hacked into the cadet's page.

"it did not orginate from that accounty, that's what we've found so far," Hansen said.

The post created a backlash on Facebook with other cadets condemning it and lashing out at the cadet whose page it was posted on.

Hansen said school officials spoke with students about the investigation.

"It is an on-going thing and we're very serious about it and that was explained to all the cadets last night," said Hansen.

It is still not clear why someone would do such a thing but NMMI said if they find out it was a fellow cadet behind the hacking, that cadet could be kicked out of school.

"Honor is one of those big things that we all believe in, so someone out there has violated the honor of one individual but he's also violated the corps of cadets all of them, every one of them and this school," Hansen said.

If it turns out someone off-campus is responsible for the hacking Hansen said they will contact authorities to see what if anything can be done.

Hansen said this will not affect students ability to access Facebook on campus.
