LOVINGTON, N.M. (KRQE) - The sudden death of a New Mexico sheriff has shaken up his community in more ways then one, including who will take his place.
Former Lea County Sheriff Rod Coffman was found dead inside his Hobbs home back in December.
Investigators say it was suicide.
The governor is ordering the county commission to hold an election for a new sheriff this year.
But commissioners are now challenging that order, saying they believe interim Sheriff Mark Hargrove has the authority to fill the remainder of Coffman’s term, which ends in 2014.
They are asking for the attorney general's help.
