WATERFLOW, N.M. (KRQE) - A repeat drunk driver, involved in a fatal crash, is still in the hospital, along with a passenger from the car he hit.

The accident happened Friday afternoon on U.S. Highway 64, near Waterflow.

Tyron Jeff, 58, and his girlfriend Sophia Cooper were parked on the shoulder with their hazard lights on.

That's when Troy Eldridge slammed his pickup truck into the couple's car at a high rate of speed.

Jeff was pronounced dead at the scene, Cooper is in stable condition and Eldridge is in fair condition.

San Juan County Deputies said that Eldridge had an open container of alcohol inside his truck, and that he appeared to be under the influence.

Eldridge pleaded guilty to DWI in 2006. A Gallup District Court Judge sentenced him to 90 days in jail, but suspended all but eight days.
