ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The teen, who nearly blew up his foot on Monday with a firework pipe bomb, was released from the hospital on Friday.
The more than 10-minute 911 call was released the same day. During the call, the teen is surprisingly calm at first.
“I just blew up my foot,” the teen told a dispatcher during the call. When the dispatcher asked how the boy responded, “playing with fireworks.”
About a minute and a half into the call the teen realized how bad the accident was and started crying and calling out for help.
“That phone call that I got from him. I would not wish it on any mother. It was the most terrifying thing,” said the teen’s mom.
The boy’s mom did not want to be identified. She told News 13 her son was just curious and that he had no clue how dangerous his little experiment was.
“He just got this idea that it might make something cool and I hope nobody else tries it,” she said.
The teen spent five days in the hospital. Photos of her son’s foot show that the inside of it was blown completely open.
“He had dropped it. It basically shot into his foot, it became a projectile at that point and shot into his foot,” she said.
The boy called his mom before he called 911. She got to her son first, but said he's lucky the emergency room doctor was so skilled.
“The experts that investigated it said that he was lucky, that he was very lucky. That normally it probably would have been much worse and maybe even that it could have killed him,” she said.
The teen is expected to make a full recovery. His mom said police told her he would not face any charges.
