ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Two same-sex couples filed a lawsuit Thursday in State District Court after Bernalillo County denied them a marriage license.
The couples involved in the lawsuit are Miriam Rand and Ona Porter of Albuquerque and Rose Griego and Kim Kiel of Santa Fe.
The lawsuit claims what Santa Fe city officials started claiming earlier this week, that New Mexico’s marriage law is not gender specific.
Even though others argue differently, the couples and the ACLU say marriage licenses should be issued to any same-sex couple who applies for one.
"Today we are here asking the courts and the people of nm to affirm that we are already doing the hard work of marriage in our daily lives,” Kiel said.
Santa Fe city officials are urging New Mexico’s county clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
A formal opinion is pending from Attorney General Gary King.
