Safe workplace training now on DVD

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Albuquerque police have come out with a three DVD set that show people how to spot a workplace shooter before he becomes a workplace shooter.

The training was originally created two years ago in response to the Emcore shootings but it only recently came out on DVD.

“It’s very crucial for people to understand that violence does not just happen out of nowhere it happens in context,” said Dr. Troy Rodgers, the head of APD’s Behavior Sciences Division.

That is what the officers and psychologist in APD’s Safe Workplace training videos are trying to drive home to employers and their workers.

“There are always warning signs there are always indicators there are always pre-signs that it’s going to take place,” Rodgers said.

The training DVD’s teach businesses how to spot the warning signs whether it be an ex-lover like in the case of Emcore, or a disgruntled employee who has made threats in the past.

The key the officers say is to pay attention to that inner voice if you feel something is not right and then take it seriously.

“Recognize that people practice their behaviors so don’t laugh it off and say oh that’s John being John, no that’s not John being John, that’s John being violent,” said Dr. Rodgers.

The next step is to tell someone about the threat either a co-worker, manager or police whether you think it has merit or not that way it can be addressed before it escalates.

“I’d rather tell somebody and be wrong than not tell somebody and be right and regret it later,” said Lieutenant Michael Archibeque.

The DVDs also show businesses what to do if they are faced with a workplace shooter.
