Pool safety reminders for summer

Parents with pools should get kids lessons

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The weather has been absolutely beautiful lately and as a result many people are hanging out in the yard or and by the pool. Experts say it's a good time to remind families with little ones about pool safety.

The chances of a small child slipping in the pool can happen in the blink of an eye. "Even with strong experienced swimmers it just takes one little mistake," says Brandon Gibson, Aquatics Division Manager for the City of Albuquerque. "One accident, one change of conditions and it could become a dangerous situation."

Just this week, a toddler was rushed to the hospital after almost drowning at a pool at a Northwest Albuquerque home.  The boy was unresponsive when paramedics arrived.  He was later stabilized at the hospital and authorities say he was under water for only a matter of seconds.

"They can inhale a lot of water and potentially drown," says Gibson. "Even if they don't, there may be long term consequences that could come along with that."

Lifeguards say it's not only a matter of keeping an eye on your kids, but if you have a pool, it's important they know how to swim.

"It's crucial, like I said it's a lifesaving skill," adds Gibson. "Anytime you're around any water, the kids need to learn how to properly float, bob to safety if possible and just more realize the overall safety that goes along with water."

Some of the more obvious rules like no running outside the pool are important, but you also want to make sure you have a working pool in order. If you have a missing or damaged drain cover, an arm can be easily sucked inside. Water isn't the only danger that parents should be aware of when their kids are playing out in the sun by the pool.

"We have outdoor pools in New Mexico, we're at a high elevation, the sun's always shining, apply sunscreen, apply it often, use hats, sunglasses, be in the shade whenever possible," Gibson recommends. "You also have to worry about dehydration too so if your little guys are out, make sure you keep them hydrated as well."

The City of Albuquerque offers a number of swimming classes at a number of its pools. You can call 311 for more information and availability.
