ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - School officials at a boarding school run by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs are denying that they kicked out then humiliated a 15-year-old Navajo girl over her pregnancy.
Court papers recently filed said that middle school director Christine Edsitty-Beach and counselor Sadie Martinez, both with Wingate Elementary School in McKinley, N.M., dispute allegations made in a lawsuit that they made the student publicly admit she was pregnant at a school assembly.
They said the student's mother asked for home-schooling.
In March, the ACLU of New Mexico filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of an eighth-grader.
According to the complaint, the eighth-grader was forced to stand before the entire school at an assembly and announced that she was pregnant, even though only three school staffer members knew.
