N.M. joins in celebrating new pope

SANTA FE (KRQE) - With the election of a new pope at the Vatican, Roman Catholics in New Mexico gathered together as part of the worldwide celebration .

In Santa Fe, a group of the faithful gathered at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe where they prayed the rosary and were joined by mariachi musicians.

The white smoke indicating the cardinals meeting in the Vatican had elected a new pope began rising at about noon Wednesday New Mexico time.

"It was so exciting because all over the world today Catholics are celebrating,' said Suzanne Uberuagea-Fowles, who helped to organize the event.  "We have our new pope."

"We want to celebrate, of course, and let the world know we love our church, and we love our new pope already."

Electing the first pope from the New World also carries special significance for Our Lady of Guadalupe, she added.

"When Our Lady appeared in Mexico City in 1531 she said specifically she came for the Americas," Uberuagea-Fowles continued.  "So to have a pope from South America, it's wonderful because we can see how God allows our mother to work here on earth and help us all to know more of His love."

Flowers and balloons, yellow and white, the papal colors, symbolized a filling of the vacancy left by former Pope Benedict XVI. At least 77 cardinals had to agree on who would be the new pope. Those who showed up for the rally Wednesday said they erupted with excitement when the white smoke appeared at the Vatican.

The priest at Our Lady of Guadalupe and parishioners said they watched the announcement live. "It really moved me that he asked the people to ask God to bless him before he blessed the people," said Father Tien-Tii Nguyen. "And I think that's beautiful."

"I'm hoping that we continue incorporating our youth, incorporating young children, and just all of us embracing each other, you know, bring peace to our world," said Gail Delgado, when asked what she hopes to see from the new pope.

Organizers said the purpose of the rally was to show their unity with the Pope Francis and the Catholic church.

Shortly after the rally ended, worshippers gathered inside Our Lady of Guadalupe for a special mass in honor of the new pope.
