SANTA FE (KRQE) - The busy evening commute ground to a halt Monday after a blown tire sent a Brinks armored truck onto railroad tracks, killing one person.

Police on Tuesday identified the man who died as Vincent Fernandez, 32, of Rio Rancho. He was a passenger on the truck.

According to state police, the accident happened around 5 p.m. when an armored truck carrying cash had a blowout, causing it to hit another truck and roll onto the Rail Runner's tracks.

The two trucks came to rest on either side of the tracks.

The accident forced northbound I-25 traffic onto a frontage road, and slowed southbound traffic to a crawl.

It also delayed a southbound commuter train on its way from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. Eventually the train was able to make it through the area—albeit very slowly.

Meanwhile, another Brinks team worked to move the money from the crashed truck into another truck.

State police said the passenger in the Brinks truck was taken to Christus St. Vincent Hospital with serious injuries and later died at the hospital. The driver's injuries were less severe.

The driver of the other truck wasn't hurt.
