State police on Thursday identified an infant and woman killed Wednesday night when their pickup was hit by a semi.
Police said Sylvia De Leon and Adrian Ibarra were killed when a tandem semi truck hit their pickup truck around 11:25 p.m. Wednesday about 25 miles east of Clines Corners.
State police said the two, along with another child, were in the camper shell on the back of the pickup, while four adults and another child were in the truck's extended cab.
Juan Ibarra was driving the pickup and towing a homemade trailer with his son's furniture. He was helping the family move from Fresno, Calif., to Lubbock, Texas.
Two people were airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, while the remaining four were taken by ground ambulance to the same hospital.
The driver of the semi, David Naron, was not injured.
State police are still investigating, and, according to Peter Olson with the state Department of Public Safety, officers will issue citations when the investigation finishes.
Around 2:15 a.m. just two miles from that scene, one semi struck the back of a parked semi on eastbound on I-40. The two occupants of the truck in the rear were airlifted to UNM Hospital while the driver of the other semi was taken to the hospital by ground ambulance.
State police said the cause of that crash was apparently driver inattention.
I-40 traffic was tied up until about 6:30 a.m. Thursday when both lanes of traffic were opened completely.
