ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A severance package offered to workers at the Los Alamos National lab will give employees up to nine months' pay for those who voluntarily leave their jobs.

On Friday, the National Nuclear Security Administration approved a plan that cuts up to 800 jobs at the lab.

The voluntary buyout payments will be based on the years of service.

Lab employees have until March 14th to sign up for the buyout after those involuntary layoffs may follow.

The layoffs are due to major budget cuts.
