SANTA FE (KRQE) - Ski Santa Fe announced it is pushing back its goal of opening on Thanksgiving Day due to a lack of snow.
Many people were looking forward to hitting the slopes starting this week.
"I'm a little bummed about it being late this year," said Tom Baldinger.
Mountain Manager Ben Abruzzo told News 13 conditions looked good early in the season but now there is just not enough snow on the ground.
"We did have a really good early snow fall of eight inches and then it went dry for a few weeks and that happens, hopefully we just keep getting more it can change pretty quick," Abruzzo said.
In the meantime Abruzzo said they are doing their part to contribute to a strong opening.
He said they have 18 snow making guns stationed on three different trails and that they are running them almost every night to help build up a good base while they wait for mother nature.
"We're just going to take it weekend by weekend, if it snows we'll open within 48 hours and snow meaning a good measurable snow fall," said Abruzzo.
Even though the conditions are not great and the mountain is not open to the public yet News 13 found a group of friends making the most out of the snow Ski Santa Fe does have.
"We came up pre-season just like a week before it starts just to set up some rails we have up there, shred before they open up the park," Sam Parker said.
At this point there is no new opening day set.
This is the fourth year in a row they have had to push back the opening.
Abruzzo said the delay should not affect revenue too much and he's optimistic for a good season.
