ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The BIA employee killed in a head on crash last week was a former Navajo Nation police officer.

Friends say Paul Cook who worked for Navajo police from 1975 to 2004 was working as a night watchman for the BIA schools when he was hit head on by a vehicle driven by Byron Bighand.

The vehicles erupted in flames and both men died at the scene.

Cook's funeral was held Monday.

Police have not released a cause of the crash but they are looking into the possibility that Bbighand had been drinking that night.
