Cop finds glass in lunch

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - A quick stop for lunch landed an Albuquerque cop in the hospital Wednesday after she bit into a burrito that had glass in it.

“She pulled out a shard of glass from her cheek,” said Northeast Area Commander Steve Warfield.

It was an unpleasant surprise to say the least.

The on-duty APD detective said she stopped at Empire Burritos around 11:30 Wednesday morning to pick up a quick lunch.

It is a place she said she has been to before.

She ordered a burrito not knowing there was something extra waiting inside an olive.

“She bit into the food and felt some pain she felt that she had bit into a bone or something to that effect,” Commander Warfield said.

The detective had to go to the hospital; the concern was that she may have swallowed some glass.

Meanwhile her fellow cops went to the restaurant on Golf Course Road to check the place out.

“Obviously in this type of situation we’re going to initiate an investigation,” said Warfield.

Officers did not find anything out of the ordinary inside the restaurant.

APD said the owner was cooperative and denied any sort of wrongdoing.

News 13 though has learned the owner, Clifton Callicotte, has been accused of questionable behavior at the restaurant before.

A woman once claimed he grabbed her and pushed her out of the shop.

“We look at those types of things it’s taken into consideration, that’s part of the investigative process,” Warfield said.

Sources said not only did Callicotte know she was a cop, he also made her burrito.

News 13 asked the commander if there is any reason to believe the glass was put in the detective’s burrito on purpose.
“It’s much too early we have no information or indication at this point in time that there was any malintent,” said Commander Warfield.

The detective was released from the hospital and is doing fine.

News 13’s Amanda Goodman asked a worker at Empire Burritos if he would do an interview about what happened.

He said he would need to discuss it with the owners who weren’t there.

After Goodman left she found out the worker was in fact Clifton Callicotte, the owner.
