Conceal carry permit requests up in NM

Increase has caused backlog for NMDPS

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Officials with the New Mexico Department of Public Safety say they have seen an increase in requests for conceal carry permits for handguns.  These figures have gone up in the last month since the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

They also add there was a similar spike in the number of requests after the movie theater shooting in Colorado in July 2012.

The high number of requests has caused a backlog for processing the permits through the system. The usual 45 to 60 days has now been pushed back to 60 to 90 days. Department of Public Safety officials say they are bringing on temporary employees to help process the requests faster.

The cost for the required training class to get the permit is around $230 on top of an additional $100 application fee that goes to the State of New Mexico.  A refresher course must be taken every two years and the permit itself renewed every four years.
