ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Authorities say he was nearly skinned to death, but a veterinarian at Albuquerque's Animal Welfare Department was able to operate on a basset hound that workers believe was attacked by other dogs or a mountain lion.
Animal welfare workers say late last month the Basset Hound they've named Willie, was attacked in Tijeras.
He was able to crawl up to someone's home and they called Animal Welfare.
Veterinarian Michael Neal says Willie was in very bad shape with skin hanging over his head and down his body. But Neal says updated emergency equipment the department received about a year ago helped them save Willie.
"We stitched him back up and did the best we could with him...he was a tough patient..and did his part and healed better than we really could have expected," Neal said.
Willie is currently in Basset Hound rehab and expected to make a full recovery.
Animal Welfare says he should be ready for adoption in about a week.
