ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A special tribute area initially honoring two balloonists killed nearly two years ago is about to connect Balloon Fiesta Park and the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum.
A groundbreaking ceremony Thursday launched the project funded with both public funds and a donation from the Abruzzo family.
The tribute area just north of the museum will feature trees, sidewalks and a special spot to honor famed balloonists Richard Abruzzo of Albuquerque and Carol Rymer Davis of Denver.
They died in 2010 when their balloon crashed into the Adriatic Sea during a storm while the competed in the Gordon Bennett gas balloon race.
The first part of the project should be finished bin time for the 2012 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in October.
