They're back: Red-light cameras return

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The switch flipped at the stroke of midnight turned red light cameras back on around Albuquerque after the city renewed the contract with the private operating company.

Just when you thought it was OK to breeze through a camera-equipped intersection, guess again.

Albuquerque drivers had a two-week break from the Big Brother eyes on some city streets.

The city's contract with Phoenix-based Redflex expired on May 24. At the time, city councilors tabled the contract extension darkening the cameras for two weeks.

Earlier this week, councilors voted 7-2 and gave the green light in favor of a new contract with the operating company.

Red-light runners at the 14 intersections around town can expect their pictures in the mail along with a $75 fine.

Councilor Dan Lewis had proposed letting voters decide the fate of the camera contract, but it was voted down in Monday night's council meeting.
