Holiday sales marginal for retailers

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The Christmas shopping season is over.  The mad rush to get that perfect gift made for a merry Christmas for some retailers, while others were happy to survive the holidays.

Some workers at nearly every large store in the mall said the holidays were good to them.

It's still too early for exact stats, but some saw profits jump from before Black Friday all the way up to Christmas last week.

"From Black Friday to the Christmas week, our sales, our numbers probably doubled, so that's what we were hoping for," said Cathleen Sena, owner of Etiquette Boutique.

It was a little bit of a different story for smaller businesses that are out of the way including those in Old Town.  Workers at stand-alone stores like Wild West T's say they still did respectable sales, but would like to have seen shoppers expand their buying habits.

Other store managers at the mall reported another small spike in sales on Sunday with people coming back to make exchanges and purchase clearance items.

Retailers say another reason for shoppers to head back to the stores after Christmas is to redeem gift certificates and gift cards.
