Friend remembers girl killed in crash

Surgeon accused of driving drunk, killing girl

SANTA FE (KRQE) - She had the face of an angel and even hinted that she knew her time on earth was short. Wednesday a family friend talked about the young girl killed in a DWI crash , and how her mother and sister are recovering.

Friends said Yuilana Vasquez Reyes was sharp as a tack for her age. While they reflected on her short life, a friend also took time out to address the woman charged with killing her; a Santa Fe surgeon.

Family friend Amayra Hamilton had strong words for Deborah Aaron,” take responsibility, be accountable for your actions.”

Friday night Santa Fe Police said Aaron's SUV collided with a minivan driven by the young girl's mother, Carla Vasquez Reyes, at St. Francis and Siringo. Police claim Aaron was drunk, the results of her blood test aren't back yet.

“This is of course an extreme tragedy,” said Hamilton.

Yuliana was killed in the accident while her mother and young sister were hospitalized.

Vasquez Reyes is currently two months pregnant and Hamilton says she’s struggling over the loss of her daughter.

Hamilton said Yuliana had hinted that she knew something bad was going to happen that night.

“She told her mother that she loved them so much and that they should never cry about her," Hamilton said.

Police are reconstructing the crash and Captain Aric Wheeler said they have not ruled out Aaron's claims that Vasquez Reyes ran a red light.

“What were the factors that contributed to the crash?” said Wheeler. “Was anybody at fault, in regards to both drivers?”

Aaron's attorney, Dan Cron, said if she didn't cause the crash, she can't be convicted of vehicular homicide. It's a strategy that he already knows works. His client Scott Owens was acquitted of DWI vehicular homicide last spring. The jury believed the defenses claims that Owen’s didn't cause the crash that killed four teens near Santa Fe.

No matter who was at fault, Hamilton had a message for anyone who thinks about getting behind the wheel after drinking.

“Don't, don't dare,” said Hamilton.

Vasquez Reyes was on her way with the girls to pick up her husband from work that night. When they didn't show he borrowed a car and went to look for them, he actually passed the crash scene and then later realized later it was his wife's crumpled minivan.

Online records show doctor Deborah Aaron had her license suspended for five years in Alaska in 2002. She was prescribing narcotics for her boyfriend, who was not a patient of hers. She had also been in trouble with the Arizona medical board for two cases of malpractice, both involved botched surgeries.
