Breast cancer run & walk to be big in NM

75 percent of money raised stays in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - October is breast cancer awareness month and the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure Run & Walk is taking place on Sunday in Albuquerque. Organizers say this could be one of the biggest turnouts yet. In fact it's so big that they moved it from last years venue.

The race raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. It also celebrates breast cancer survivors and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. The disease also knows no boundaries whether it's age, socio-economic status or gender which means men are affected as well.

Organizers say 75 percent of the money raised will stay for helping in the fight against the disease here in New Mexico.

"It's really inspiring to see all these amazing women and a few men come out and they have their pink paddles that say how long they've been a survivor," says Karolyn Cannata-Winge, Director of Marketing & Events for the Central New Mexico office for Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure. "So you might see someone with 30 years or 3 days and that is incredible, it's just so inspirational."

Registration for the race the will remain open through race day.  On Friday, you can show up in person at the Coronado Center between 10 a.m. -7 p.m. and take care of registration. It will also be available on race day which is Sunday at Wilson Stadium at Manzano High School. The race is set to start at 6 a.m.

Organizers also say they're still in desperate need of volunteers to help with the race. You can call their office at 505-265-4649.
