UNM grad opens low-cost health clinic

Ukraine native joins with Mexico native

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A University of New Mexico graduate from Ukraine has opened a low cost health clinic in Albuquerque's South Valley to help those who would otherwise not seek health care.

Olena Dziuba who came to New Mexico from Ukraine five years ago says she was shocked at how expensive America's health care system is, a much different system than the one back home which is mostly free.

Dziuba noticed that the need was so great in the South Valley that she decided to open up a health clinic herself.

With the help of a family friend Mauro Nava, a Mexico native, La Esperanza was born. The clinic is located at 1010 Bridge SW.

The clinic offers a wide range of services, from immunizations to X-rays with a basic appointment costing just $69; a visit with a specialist costs $99.  The clinic also accepts insurance from most companies.

Dzuiba says her mission is to make sure anyone who needs health care can get it. Dzuiba also wants to make sure patients get good quality time with their doctor.

"One time when I went to the doctor myself I maybe saw the doctor for five minutes and he didn't really pay attention to me. I was really upset about it." says Dzuiba

This clinic is truly a family practice where providers try to build personal relationships with patients.

The clinic has seen several hundred patients since opening Oct. 4. Right now most patients can get seen the same day.

For more information call La Esperanza at (505) 508-1739.
