'Spice' brownies sicken students

SANTA FE (KRQE) - Two cousins admit they added a little something extra to spice up the home-made treats they brought to school.

The spice they added got them in big trouble at Ortiz Middle School in Santa Fe.

“Kids told me about these brownies that I think seventh or eighth graders brought, and there was like different stuff in them,” said sixth grade student Tyler Alarid.

Santa Fe police said that stuff' was a synthetic marijuana substance, known by a names likes Spice and K2, which can get people high like the real thing.

“There are two girls that were the individuals that actually made the brownies and had the ingredient of the K2 spice in them,” Capt. Aric Wheeler said.

Police said the girls brought the brownies to school Thursday and passed them out during lunch.

Officers believe three of the other girls who ate the brownies knew they had a little something extra that would get them high, but the fourth girl had no clue.

“Our understanding is at least one child did not know that there was any type of mind-altering substance inside of the brownie,” Wheeler said.

All six girls were taken to the emergency room after complaining of stomach pains and then released.

School administrators called Santa Fe police after the girls were transported.

Wheeler said this is the first time they’ve dealt with spice, so they are not sure if it’s illegal to have or not.

“This is all new ground for us so that’s why its going to take a lot of legwork on our officers to determine what is appropriate as far as charging documents and what these children should be accountable for,” Wheeler said.

As for other students at the mid school, they say the whole situation made them uneasy.

“It just makes me uncomfortable 'cause this is a pretty good school and don’t want to ruin it,” Alarid said.

The school district said it believes spice falls under its drug-and-alcohol ban.  Because of that the five girls who knowingly ate the laced brownies have been suspended for at least three days.

Last year the state banned selling and possessing synthetic marijuana.

News 13 read through the law, which makes it a petty misdemeanor for a minor to have K2 or spice with a possible $100 fine.
