OTERO COUNTY (KRQE) - A 22-year-old woman from Otero County had died from Hantavirus.

The state's health department announced Monday that the unidentified woman is the second person in New Mexico to die from the disease.

The first fatal case occurred in March, when a Taos County man was inflicted with the ailment.

Hantavirus is a deadly disease transmitted by infected rodents through urine, droppings or saliva.

People can contract the disease when they breathe in airborne particles of the virus.
