UNM drive thru flu shots a hit

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The University of New Mexico free drive thru flu shot clinic created a bumper-to-bumper traffic situation Saturday.

UNM Health Services held their annual drive-thru flu shot clinic and the turnout was huge.

Officials said these drive-thru clinics have been a hit in the past, with an estimated 4,500 people vaccinated last year.

They said they expect this year’s total to blow that number out of the water.

“It's particularly convenient for the elderly who have trouble getting around, they don't even have to get out of the car, so it's a good service, people are very thankful,” Director of Primary Care Karen Ellingboe said.

Security guards directed traffic as it came in to the UNM Family Practice Center at 2400 Tucker NE, and once people reached the front of the line, they filled out a form and rolled up their sleeves while nurses and medical personnel gave them a flu shot.

Due to the large number of people who showed up, there was a wait, but most people News 13 spoke with were grateful for the opportunity to get a free seasonal flu shot.

“We saw it on TV and thought it would be the easiest way since my husband has a hard time walking,” Mary Shuler said.

“We've done it every year that they've offered it,” George Bazan said.

Both drive-thru and walk-in flu shot clinics are offered every Saturday from now until late November or until the seasonal flu vaccine runs out.

Health officials advise it is best to get your shot as soon as possible in case they do run out later on.
