Interview: Rosie Trujillo

(KRQE) - Trujillo is a resident of the state of Washington, with family roots in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. A genealogical study conducted by one of her relatives in the late 1990s revealed her family had Jewish roots. It was confirmed after she underwent a genetic test with her daughter in the year 2000, shortly after her daughter was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The test revealed Trujillo carries a genetic mutation that makes her especially vulnerable to certain types of cancer. Geneticists say the mutation is relatively unique to the Jewish population. Dozens of Trujillo's relatives have been tested for the mutation. Many of them have it, too.
