Garcia's UNM office had sex toys & more

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) - Former University of New Mexico president and professor Dr. Chris Garcia had much more than books in his on-campus office.

The search warrant in the online prostitution case against Garcia has been unsealed.

It was served on June 23, the same day Garcia was arrested on charges of promoting prostitution.

According to the warrant, Garcia had nine sex books in his office as well as a folder stuffed with statutes on prostitution law.  Last week we discovered that he also had a briefcase full of sex toys and a grading list for prostitutes in the program.

It makes sense to police since they allege Garcia was one of the ring leaders in  coast to coast virtual house of hookers called Southwest Companions.

Garcia allegedly would recruit, promote and rate prostitutes for johns on the members only website.

Right now Garcia is charged with one count of promotion prostitution, but prosecutors said more could be on the way.

"There could be additional charges and certainly there could be more counts as we learn more," District Attorney Kari Brandenburg said.

UNM has not only has temporarily suspended Garcia from teaching, he's also not allowed on campus.

A university spokesperson declined an interview but emailed News 13 a statement.

"Based on what has been revealed to date, Dr. Garcia, at President Schmidly's direction, is not allowed on university facilities, pending the outcome of the investigation." "President Schmidly took the action he felt was needed to safeguard the institution, its students, its faculty and its staff."

Police also confiscated hard drives and computers from Garcia's office.

They plan to scour those to see if Garcia was accessing Southwest Companions from his office.

Police also searched Garcia's home and took computers which they plan to look through.

Garcia is out on bond but is not allowed access to the internet.

No word yet on when his case will be sent to the grand jury.
