COCHITI CANYON, N.M. (KRQE) - Dixon’s Apple Orchard has had a tough year, first it was fire and now it is floods. The Northern New Mexico Apple Farm has experienced its share of natural disaster destruction.
Heavy rain storms Sunday and Monday caused a powerful river of mud to take out everything in its path as it tore through the famous orchard.
Before Monday’s rain, crews had been busy cleaning up the debris from the night before, but their efforts were halted after the pouring rain returned.
Earlier this year nearly a tenth of the farm was torched after the Las Conchas fire rushed through the farm engulfing 300 trees.
Members of the Dixon family say they are both exhausted and devastated after the latest destruction and don’t know if there will even be a crop this coming year.
Although in an effort to save the farm, a fundraiser will be held this Saturday at the La Tienda in Eldorado, NM. The event will be held from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will feature music, food, a raffle and a silent auction.
