ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Kashka the giraffe, a 16-year-resident of the Rio Grande Zoo, has been euthanized after suffering an injury that kept her from standing, officials of the Albuquerque BioPark announced Friday.

"Veterinarians felt that attempts to treat her condition would not be successful, and it was decided to humanely euthanize her," a statement from BioPark Director Rick Janser said. A necropsy also showed Kashka was in the early stages of a disease that limits the absorption of nutrition, he said.

Kashka was born in 1994 at the Miami Zoo and came to the Rio Grande Zoo 10 months later.
