Tax donations would help tree program

SANTA FE (AP) - The New Mexico State Forestry Division's tree-planting program could get a boost during tax season.

State Forester Tony Delfin says taxpayers have a chance to donate a portion of their tax returns to the agency's re-leaf program through a check-off box at the end of their state tax return documents.

He says no donation is too small and every cent will be put toward planting trees around the state.

The program is funded exclusively through private and corporate donations. Since created by the New Mexico Legislature in 1990, more than $520,000 has been granted to plant more than 18,000 trees on public lands throughout the state.

Delfin says the public can also volunteer at tree-planting events funded by the re-leaf program.
