State issues winter storm tips

SANTA FE (KRQE) - The New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management on Wednesday urged New Mexicans, especially those in rural areas, to get ready for upcoming winter storms.

The tips:

• Between storms, stock up on food, water, fuel or wood, any medications you may need, and food and water for pets and livestock.
• If you're snowed in and need help, make an SOS in the snow that can be seen from the air.
• Have a portable radio and extra batteries for weather reports, or a windup radio that doesn't require batteries.
• Clear roof gutters and drains, and remove accumulated snow from rooftops. When clearing snow and ice from your roof, start at the edges and move inward.
• Clear your walkways and driveways.
• During storms, reach out to neighbors and check on their well-being, especially the elderly and those with special needs.
• When snow melts, be cautious driving through low-lying areas and arroyos, since just 6 inches of running water can sweep a car or truck away. Avoid muddy areas if possible and don't travel alone.
• Make a list of emergency contacts, and keep it in a prominent place.
