Snow snarl backs up I-40 for miles

CLINES CORNERS, N.M. (KRQE) - A few inches of ice caused a 6-mile-long headache for drivers on Interstate 40 at Clines Corners Monday morning.

The latest weekend storm that started on Sunday night hit hardest in the northern and eastern parts of the state.

The back up on I-40 lasted a few hours until the highway was back open by 10 a.m.

There were also no reports of any injuries from this morning's accidents.

Travel also was being discouraged in northern Lincoln County on U.S. Highway 54 and adjacent state roads due to heavy snow and strong winds.

At 11 a.m. the New Mexico Department of Transportation, while urging motorists to slow down and use extra caution, provided this update to road conditions posted on the NMDOT Web site :

  • I-25, Fair Driving Conditions road is wet and drying from mile marker 299 to mile marker 388 (Glorieta to Colmor). Crews have plowed, salted, and cindered.
  • I-25, Fair Driving Conditions road is wet and drying from mile marker 435 to mile marker 450. Crews have plowed, salted, and cindered.
  • NM 104, Difficult Driving Conditions from mile marker 0 to mile marker 106. Road is slushy (0 to 32) and road is wet and drying (32 to 106). Crews are out plowing, salting, and cindering.
  • NM 129, Fair Driving Conditions road is wet and drying from mile marker 0 to mile marker 17. Crews have plowed, salted and cindered.
  • NM 419, Fair Driving Conditions road is wet and drying from mile marker 0 to mile marker 36. Crews have plowed, salted and cindered.
  • US 64/87, Difficult Driving Conditions blowing snow from mile marker 395 to mile marker 402. Crews are out throwing salt and cinders.
  • NM 72, Difficult Driving Conditions from mile marker 25.5 to mile marker 36.8. Crews have plowed, salted, and cindered.
  • NM 518, Fair Driving Conditions road is wet and drying from mile marker 1 to mile marker 44.3 (Las Vegas to Holman Hill). Crews have plowed, salted, and cindered.
  • NM 434, Fair Driving Conditions road is wet and drying from mile marker 0 to mile marker 26 (Mora to NM Jct. 120). Crews have plowed, salted, and cindered.
  • NM 434, Fair Driving Conditions Road is wet and drying from mile marker 23.5 to mile marker 36.5.
  • US 64, Fair Driving Conditions road is wet and drying from mile marker 272.5 to mile marker 315. Crews have plowed, salted, and cindered.
  • NM 38, Fair Driving Conditions snow packed and icy from mile marker 12.7 to mile marker 29.2. Crews have plowed, salted, and cindered.
  • NM 58, Fair Driving Conditions road is wet and drying from mile marker 0 to mile marker 19. Crews have plowed, salted, and cindered.
  • US 64, Fair Driving Conditions road is wet and drying from mile marker 335 to mile marker 344. Crews have plowed, salted, and cindered.
