FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - There's plenty of firewood available in one 50-acre area of the Carson National Forest in northwest New Mexico.
About two hours southeast of Bloomfield is an area with felled Ponderosa trees. The land was cleared last year to prepare it for brush growth, and now it needs to be cleaned.
Jicarilla District Ranger Mark Catorn says that since the wood was cut last year, it is in the best shape for collection.
There is a minimum purchase of two cords for a firewood permit, and a maximum of 10 cords per household per year.
Collectors can pick up wood until the end of December, before the snow starts to fall. Forest officials say that if the wood is not picked up, the timber will be stacked and burned.
