GALLUP, N.M. (KREZ-KRQE) - Icy conditions on Interstate 40 may have contributed to at least seven semis that jackknifed between Bluewater Lake State Park and the Continental Divide.
Westbound traffic on I-40 is at 20 miles an hour in the area between Gallup and Grants due to the conditions.
Blowing snow has caused near-whiteout conditions in some places.
Snow began accumulating in Gallup shortly after sunset Monday. Some areas got at least an inch of snow.
Several hotels said they were filling up as drivers scrapped travel plans to avoid the potentially dangerous driving conditions.
Some of the worst driving conditions in the state on Tuesday were in western New Mexico, especially on Interstate 40 between Gallup and Grants with some icy and snowpacked stretches.
