FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - The city of Farmington could be buying about $300,000 worth of water rights on the Animas River.
City councilors are to vote Tuesday night whether to approve purchases totaling 187 acre-feet. An acre-foot is about 326,000 gallons and can meet the annual water needs of one to two U.S. households.
City documents show the council will decide on four separate water rights purchases that range from $1,500 to $1,900 per-acre foot.
The state engineer also has to approve such water rights transactions.
The sellers would not receive the bulk of the payment until that approval.
