Fuel spill may pose small risk to ABQ water

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - New results suggest the massive underground fuel spill at Kirtland Air Force Base may pose only a small risk to Albuquerque’s drinking water.

The Air Force may have found the edge of the plume of contaminated groundwater spreading from the decades-old jet fuel spill that's believed to have started leaking in the 1950's.

Some estimates have the spill at eight-million gallons.

The Albuquerque Journal reports officials say water drawn from new wells beneath a southeast Albuquerque neighborhood appear to be free of contamination.

The officials also said the new preliminary test results mean the current risk to drinking water is small.

Officials are still waiting for confirmation of the results.
