Rio Rancho dried out a long time ago from the devastating monsoon floods of 2006, but the memory is still fresh for those who don't want to see it happen again.

The Southern Sandoval County Arroyo Flood Control Authority hosted an erosion workshop Saturday at Enchanted Hills Elementary.

The area was socked by heavy rains, flooding and erosion in the summer of 2006.

Homeowners saw entire streets disappear, and the elementary school saw a nearby bridge washed away.

Saturday's workshop included ways for homeowners to protect their property, and a tour of a new detention pond near the elementary school.

"Each separate basin in the three corners of this triangle allows the water to still and slow down," Jim Brook said. "Then the ultimate overflow should there be a really big rain event will get down into the curb drains."

For anyone who missed the seminar, brochures and DVD copies are available. Call SSCAFCA for more information at 505-892-7246.
