TIMBERON, N.M. (KBIM-KREZ) - Fire crews on Thursday focused their efforts on hotspots and cutting fire breaks as the Timberon Fire burning near the town of the same name burns 140 acres.

At least eight structures were destroyed: three homes and five outbuildings. Another home was damaged by fire.

On Wednesday, crews battled crowning — flames jumping from treetop to treetop — but didn't have that problem on Thursday morning.

While air tankers were busy Wednesday, on Thursday morning, crews instead needed just helicopters to help with hotspots.

As of 3 p.m. Thursday, crews had gotten the fire about 20 percent contained.

While no structures are immediately threatened, according to State Forestry, evacuation orders remain in effect for about 20 homes.

Many evacuees showed up to the American Red Cross' shelter at Cloudcroft High School Wednesday night, but most of them are instead staying at nearby hotels.

The Red Cross will keep the shelter open for as long as it's needed.
