DUNKEN, N.M. (KRQE-KBIM) - Cooler temperatures and higher humidity helped firefighters gain the upper hand on the Picacho fire on Monday, allowing them to fully contain the 16,141-acre fire.
New Mexico State Forestry spokesperson Dan Ware said Tuesday that crews will continue to patrol the area and mop up the fire to make sure no hotspots remain.
The fire near the southeastern New Mexico town of Dunken started last Wednesday along Highway 82 near the Eddy County-Chaves County line, possibly caused by a tossed cigarette or a vehicle's hot catalytic converter.
