Wildfire contained at 9,000 acres

Firefighters monitor hot spots

HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE-KBIM) - Firefighters late Tuesday declared the big grass fire near Hobbs is 100 percent contained at an estimated 9,000 acres.

A downed power line near State Road 238 sparked what became known as the 238 Fire late Monday morning. As strong winds pushed the flames from near Buckeye southeastward toward Monument and Hobbs the fire destroyed a barn and an abandoned truck stop. At the height of the fire authorities closed several highways including U.S. 62/180, the main link between Hobbs and Carlsbad

State Forestry crews are watching over still-smoldering hot spots. No injuries have been reported.
