LANL project to control sediment

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - Los Alamos National Laboratory is trying to reduce sediments flowing down two canyons toward the Rio Grande.

The lab broke ground last week on one of two planned "grade control" structures aimed at trapping sediments in Pueblo and DP canyons.

The 8-foot high structures will be made of rocks tightly packed into wire enclosures.

The one in Pueblo Canyon also will help an existing wetland grow. The wetland traps sediment in thick vegetation.

The project is to be finished early next year.

Other elements of the project, including planting 10,000 willow trees in Pueblo Canyon, have already been completed.
