ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The water levels at Elephant Butte Lake have hit an eight year low.

The Las Cruces Sun News reports the manager of the Elephant Butte irrigation district says the lake hit its low point on September 4TH and hasn't been this low since 2004.

The lake provides water primarily for farmers in Dona Ana county and southern Sierra County.

This is the third year with low water levels.

Making things worse is low forecasts for snowfall in the Rocky Mountains which supply the reservoirs with runoff.
