Earthquake ripples central New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An earthquake rattled central New Mexico Friday evening prompting calls to police agencies.
Staff working in the Valencia County Dispatch Center in Los Lunas felt the quake and then began fielding calls from concerned residents.
There were no reports of damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the 6:59 p.m. temblor at Magnitude 3.5 and placed the epicenter a mile north of Belen and 4 miles beneath the surface.
Central New Mexico is geologically active as the Rio Grande rift slowly widens generating numerous small shakes mostly between Albuquerque and Socorro, according to the USGS.

Generally an earthquake must reach Magnitude 2.5 before it can be felt and Magnitude 6.1 before serious damage can be expected.
The Valencia County Dispatch Center is about nine miles north of the epicenter.
