SANTA FE (KRQE) - When she was a kitten, all seemed normal for Meow. Now she's 2 and weighs the cat equivalent of a 600-pound human.

Animal Humane of Santa Fe is trying to adopt out a 39-pound cat that was recently surrendered by its owner.

Meow arrived at the shelter several days ago after the 87-year-old owner said she could no longer take care of her.

The owner told employees Meow was 2 years old, was fit as a kitten but suddenly ballooned.

The cat should be about 12 pounds, according to veterinarians who say 39 pounds for a cat is equivalent to a 600-pound man.

The vets added Meow's health is in serious danger just like a morbidly obese person. Her heart will have a hard time working through all that fat.

Shelter workers don't know what the owner was feeding Meow, but she has already lost two pounds since being placed with a foster family.

Veterinarians are working to reduce the cat's weight but say it has to be done slowly to keep the cat healthy.

Anyone interested in adopting Meow can contact Santa Fe Animal Humane .
