AZTEC, N.M. (KRQE) - Heavy rains washed out a bridge near Aztec and stranded hundreds of homeowners overnight.

Calls started coming in to Aztec public works around 6:30 p.m. Sunday from residents saying a bridge was washing out.

The Cox bridge is on San Juan County Road 2900.

The only other bridge leading out of the area is the Kiffin bridge four miles down the same road. It's under construction. Crews completed a bypass by 5 a.m. Monday.

The Cox bridge will be closed all week.
