ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The Cibola National Forest has closed two trailheads and a picnic area over concerns about people meeting up with bears.
The closure area takes in the Cienega Canyon and Sulphur Canyon picnic areas and the Cienega Horse Bypass trailhead and is west of State Route 536 and south of the Doc Long Picnic Ground.
“We are closing the area to protect public health and safety due to the increased risk of dangerous interactions between bears and humans,” Sandia District Ranger Cid Morgan said in a statement released Tuesday.
The closure remains in effect until Oct. 31 unless it is rescinded earlier.
